Report Finds Wide Price Gaps as Michigan Hospitals Mark Up Prescription Drugs

June 10, 2025

A new report reveals major price disparities in prescription drugs at Michigan hospitals, with some patients paying thousands more for the same medication depending on where they receive care.

The Michigan Health Purchasers Coalition, which issued the report, found that at least one hospital marked up prescription drug prices by as much as 800% over what it paid manufacturers.

The analysis compared prices for three specialty drugs and found a wide range of costs, even within the same geographic region, meaning patients in neighboring cities could pay vastly different amounts for the same treatment.

The coalition said the findings highlight the need for greater transparency in hospital drug pricing to ensure patients aren’t overpaying for essential medications. As prescription drug costs continue to rise, the grouped urged policymakers and health care leaders to act.

Lawmakers in Oregon and Washington have passed drug price transparency laws to identify medications that pose affordability challenges to consumers. However, prescription drugs remain one of the fastest-growing health care expenses in both states.
