People are talking: Pharmaceutical companies want you to think they’re holding the line on prices, but consumers aren’t buying it

February 13, 2018

health care spendingIt’s become a tradition. Many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies celebrate the new year by raising prices on existing medications. This year, drug makers wanted American consumers to know that they are “holding the line”… which means most price increases were held below 10 percent.

But the Voices for Affordable Health community didn’t let Big Pharma off the hook. Here’s what some of you posted on Facebook:

  • Dianne Henley wonders if the 2018 price increases simply piled onto large 2017 increases: “Is this before or after they raised prices this year?” she writes. “Synthroid went up 75 percent.”
  • Allen McCully thinks prices are still headed in the wrong direction: “They need to lower prices by 80 percent,” he writes.
  • Sandy Whitmore (who uses an illustration of Wonder Woman as her Facebook pix) shared: “My granddaughter just got her price for Humira. And for the beginning of treatment and one month, it is $14,000. I kid you not.”
  • Jodie Taylor, who is a nurse, writes: “They should have to come and help me discharge my patients home knowing they aren’t going to fill the prescriptions they need.”

“My granddaughter just got her price for Humira. And for the beginning of treatment and one month, it is $14,000. I kid you not.”
