Expecting a baby? Here’s what to know about hospital maternity costs

December 9, 2025

Having a baby is exciting — but the hospital bill can be a shock.

U.S. News & World Report recently broke down why costs vary so widely and what expecting parents can do to avoid surprises.

Hospitals often offer “maternity packages,” but what’s included (and what’s not) can differ dramatically. Some bundles cover labor, delivery, routine newborn care and a short hospital stay. Others bill each service separately — meaning parents can be hit with extra charges for anesthesia, lab tests, specialists, longer stays or unexpected complications.

Even when hospitals offer upfront price estimates, they’re just that: estimates. The actual bill may change depending on what happens during labor or if a baby needs additional care. And while federal rules require hospitals to share their prices publicly, many parents say the information can still be confusing or hard to compare.

Several factors influence how much you’ll pay:

• The type of delivery. Vaginal births generally cost less than C-sections. Unexpected C-sections can significantly increase the bill.

  • Your insurance plan. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance and out-of-network rules all matter.
  • Care for the newborn. Routine care is usually included, but if a baby requires time in the NICU, costs can climb quickly.

•     Added services. Anesthesiology, lab work and specialist care often appear as   separate charges.

For parents trying to plan ahead, experts recommend asking your hospital and insurer detailed questions before delivery:

  • What exactly is included in the maternity package?
  • What services are billed separately?
  • Which providers involved in the delivery are out of your insurance network?
  • What would change your expected cost (for example, an emergency C-section)?

Even with preparation, many families still end up surprised by charges they didn’t anticipate. It’s another example of how unpredictable — and unaffordable — health care can be.
