The Cost of Caring: Prescription Drug Prices in America

October 25, 2024

If you’ve ever felt uneasy about how much you’re paying for your medications, you’re not alone. A recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that many people share your concerns about the high costs of prescription drugs.

It’s clear that many Americans think prescription drugs cost too much, with more than 70% believing prices are unreasonable. For many, this isn’t just a passing thought—it affects their daily lives. One in five people admitted that they or someone in their household has skipped doses or decided not to fill a prescription because of the price tag. That’s a big deal when it comes to staying healthy!

Among health care worries, affordability tops the list. Many people fear rising drug prices more than even the possibility of needing long-term care. This shows just how much medication costs weigh on us, especially as we age and may rely more on prescriptions. The good news is that people are looking for solutions. A strong majority of those polled support government actions to tackle costs. About 80% favor allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, and there’s significant support for capping out-of-pocket costs for Medicare beneficiaries. As one KFF poll respondent put it, “It’s crazy that I have to worry about how I’m going to pay for my medicine just to stay healthy.”

Most people also think drug companies should provide more information about how they set prices. Transparency is key; people feel they deserve to know why some medications cost so much more than others. As the conversation about drug prices continues, it’s important to stay informed and advocate for change. Health care shouldn’t be a burden, and everyone deserves access to the medications they need without breaking the bank.

In the end, we all want to see affordable prescription drugs. Do you have a story about prescription drug prices affecting your life? Share your story with us HERE.
