Even if it isn’t possible to have a friend or family member fill that role, it is almost always possible to find an experienced patient advocate willing to help. In many cases, this type of assistance is available at no extra cost.
Here’s how to find the right person:
- Check with your insurance company. Your insurer can connect you with a case manager or advocate who can help you coordinate care or resolve billing questions.
- Ask your doctor or hospital. Many hospitals have a social worker, ombudsman or case managers on staff.
- Contact Medicare. The federal Medicare program has a toll-free number (1-800-Medicare) and extensive information available on its website, medicareadvocacy.org
- Consult an expert. The National Association of Health Care Advocacy Consultants maintains an online directory of members.
