It’s not your imagination, prescription drug costs jumped this year

prescription drug costs are too high

If it seems like your prescription medications cost more than ever, it’s not your imagination. The prices of more than 500 drugs jumped at the start of 2019.

An analysis by GoodRx, an app and website focused on drug pricing, found that prescription medications continue to get more expensive. Findings include:

  • Between Jan. 1 and March 31, manufacturers’ prices for all brand-name and generic drugs increased by 2.9 percent.
  • More than 500 brand-name medications increased in price in January, when manufacturers commonly raise prices.
  • A monthly supply of any of the 20 most expensive medications in the U.S. now tops more than $25,000.

While it’s common for drug makers to raise their prices in the first quarter, Tori Marsh, one of the researchers involved in the analysis, told the online publication FierceHealthcare that the sheer volume of drugs that saw a January price increase is notable.

“Over 500 –that’s crazy to see,” Marsh said.
