Joint replacements are innovative medical improvements that have improved the quality of life for many consumers.
But the cost can vary widely, depending on the hospital you choose, from $5,000 to as much as $30,000, according to an analysis of cost data from hospitals done by Premier. The analysis included about 283,000 patient discharges at 869 hospitals from October 2015 to March 2017.
The reasons for the disparity include the medical devices the hospital uses, Modern Healthcare reports, even whether the hospital uses a local or general anesthesia, the number of people in the operating room and the kind of bone cement used to hold the implant in place.
